Councilmember Agran Gets Special Meeting on OCPA

On June 14 at 3 PM, members of the Irvine City Council will have a special meeting to discuss the Orange County Power Authority. Mayor Farrah Khan signed onto a proposal from Councilmember Agran to allow for long-overdue public attention and scrutiny of the Authority after a series of troubling developments emerged.

The Orange County Power Authority has faced calls for transparency for more than a year to no avail. For example, last September 30, Councilmember Agran asked the Authority for a public presentation to the City Council on its operations but received no response. Now, the purpose of the special meeting will be to discuss:

  1. Directing the City Manager to commence a City audit of the Orange County Power Authority, and

  2. Assessing the City’s exposure to liability.

Councilmember Agran is looking forward to hearing from his colleagues and the public about how the City can reform its position in this startup:

“OCPA has left me with a number of unanswered questions that I hope we can explore [next Tuesday]. As OCPA launches service, I am looking for transparency on its operations so we can address any outstanding problems before its residential launch.”

The Orange County Power Authority has received recent media attention. In comments to the OC Register, Councilmember Agran shared that the Authority has not answered a number of public records requests he filed in March.

The June 14 special meeting at 3 PM will precede the regular 4 PM City Council meeting. For more information, review the Irvine City Council agendas webpage.
