Agran appoints Dr. Phyllis Agran to Irvine Children, Youth and Family Advisory Committee

UPDATE (07/13/2021): Effective July 9, 2021, Phyllis Agran was also appointed to the Irvine Child Care Committee.

Councilmember Larry Agran is pleased to welcome Dr. Phyllis Agran back to the Irvine Children, Youth and Family Advisory Committee.

The Committee's mission is to provide ongoing review and evaluation of the City's children, youth, and family-related initiatives. As a pediatrician and researcher, Dr. Agran has dedicated her career to advancing the health of children through clinical care, evidence-based policy, and community-based advocacy. In light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Agran will be an especially valuable resource to the committee in its efforts to ensure that Irvine continues to be a safe community where children, youth and families thrive emotionally, physically, academically, and socially.

The Irvine Children, Youth and Families Advisory Committee meets quarterly to review and evaluate the City of Irvine's Strategic Plan for Children, Youth and Families. About Phyllis Agran

Dr. Agran is American Board of Pediatrics certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology. She is Professor at the UC Irvine School of Medicine and a practicing physician. She founded the Child Injury Prevention Research Group at UCI, which is focused on translating research into policy. Dr. Agran is a past president of California Chapter 4, American Academy of Pediatrics (2009) and in 2019 was elected to serve again as a Member-at-Large. She chairs the Chapter Committee on Injury and Violence Prevention and additionally serves on the National American Academy of Pediatrics, Executive Committee of the Council on Injury and Violence Prevention. She also recently completed service on the AAP National Nominating Committee. Dr. Agran is a past president of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. She is currently working on Clinic in the Park, a unique one-stop-shop health collaborative model designed to promote health and prevent disease among vulnerable children. Clinic in the Park is a project of the American Academy of Pediatrics Community Access to Child Health and Healthy Tomorrows Partnership for Children. Dr. Agran also serves on the California Department of Public Health, Essentials for Childhood Leadership Action Team. In 2020, she was appointed to serve on the Executive Advisory Committee of the California Coalition for Children’s Safety and Health. She is a nationally-recognized advocate for public health policies aimed at reducing trauma and injury to children. Dr. Agran also writes featured articles for Irvine Community News and Views.

Dr. Agran’s recent work includes evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on school health services and school nurses. She is a member of the UCI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science K-12 School Restart Working Group. She is also a member of the Irvine Unified School District Medical Advisory Board.

Phyllis received her BA degree from UC Berkeley, Master’s Degree in Biology from Boston University, Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from Harvard University, and her medical degree from UC Irvine. She lives in Irvine with her husband Larry, former Irvine Mayor and recently elected City Councilmember. Phyllis and Larry live close to their son Kenny, daughter-in-law Kerrie, and grandkids, Morgan and Ben.
