Councilmember Agran Calls for 100% Renewable Electricity for Irvine Residents from Orange County Power Authority

Councilmember Larry Agran has submitted a Memorandum requesting that a resolution be placed on the November 23rd City Council meeting agenda, calling for 100% renewable electricity from the Orange County Power Authority. Under the “Rule of Two,” the Memo awaits a “second” from another Councilmember in order to actually be on the Council agenda.

At the last Council meeting, Councilmember Larry Agran raised “grave” concerns he has about the future of the Orange County Power Authority (OCPA). In December 2019, the OCPA was established with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing residential and business customers electricity at a competitive rate. Despite committing $7.725 million of public funds to the creation and organization of the OCPA, Irvine’s ratepayers have yet to receive any commitment that they will enjoy reliable, affordable energy from carbon-free sources.

Without moving toward 100% renewable energy sources at a quicker pace, Irvine will be unlikely to meet the goals of its ambitious Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
