Agran appoints Kev Abazajian to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commitee

UPDATE (07/13/2021): Effective July 9, 2021, Noha Nour was appointed to the Ad-Hoc Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee in place of Kev Abazajian who continues to serve on the Green Ribbon Environmental Committee.

Councilmember Agran is pleased to appoint Dr. Kev Abazajian to the newly formed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

This committee will provide input on the needs of the community with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in City employment and contracting; hate crimes and incidents; the City’s diversity campaign; and implementation of the provisions of the Convention of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

An immigrant himself, Dr. Abazajian has long been an outspoken supporter and advocate of diversity and inclusion in and beyond Irvine. He is an active member of the Armenian-American community in Irvine, advocate for LGBTQ rights and inclusion, and routinely works to address the various forms of hate and intolerance in Irvine and Orange County.

About Kev Abazajian

Dr. Kev Abazajian is an astrophysicist who received his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of California, San Diego in 2001. He joined the faculty at UC Irvine in 2011. Dr. Abazajian had prior research fellow appointments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory, and a faculty appointment at the University of Maryland, College Park. His astrophysics research primarily focuses on the nature of dark matter at the interface between particle physics and astrophysics. He also does research on the sources and uses of energy in society — striving to implement policies promoting carbon-free energy. Dr. Abazajian grew up as an immigrant in Texas from the former Soviet Union, and is an active member of the Armenian-American community in Irvine and Orange County.
