Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery remarks from 01/26/2020 Council Meeting

Last night, Councilmember Larry Agran again urged his fellow Councilmembers to take action to commence construction of the Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery at the Great Park. As he put it last night, “I regret to say that I did not receive the support of a second Councilperson, so for all those who have been asking, that is why the matter is not on this agenda. I will continue to solicit a second signature, I’ll keep my fingers crossed. Let’s hope that there’s a favorable response to this resolicitation.”

As shared here last week, Larry introduced an official Resolution that, if adopted by the City Council, would direct immediate construction of the Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery at the 125-acre ARDA site at the Great Park. The construction would begin with demolition, site clean-up, site clearance, and preservation of historic features such as the iconic aircraft control tower that was so prominent at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. In the lead-up to last night’s City Council meeting, Larry was requesting a fellow Councilmember second the item so that it could be placed on the Agenda for discussion and, ultimately, a vote. No second has been forthcoming.

Larry would like to acknowledge the hundreds of Irvine citizens who continue to work for immediate Council action on the Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery, including those who take the time to participate in Council Meetings via Zoom. Your dedication to realizing the will of the people and seeing this project through is a constant inspiration to him and a great service to our City.
