Public Health Is A Priority Discussion in Irvine

City resources have powered Irvine’s COVID-19 response through partnerships with many sectors. These last two years have daylighted the need for one entity solely responsible for public health and overseeing community health plans and goals.

For those reasons, Councilmember Agran is looking forward to discussing the establishment of an Office of Health and Wellness on February 8 in an item brought forward by Councilmembers Kim and Carroll. He also wants YOU to have a voice in that City Council discussion. Take this quick poll to name your priorities for a public health department.

Councilmember Agran proposed investing in public health and the creation of a new public health department last year. COVID-19 is creating additional challenges, and the $56 million the City is receiving in American Rescue Plan funding is an opportunity to begin the logical evolution and establish a City health department.

“We know community health solutions are in the best hands at the local level. Alongside our healthcare partners, a new department will centralize valuable public health activities and provide highly focused attention for our residents and their well being.“ - Larry Agran

There are a number of California cities that have historically maintained their own health departments: the cities of Pasadena, Long Beach, and Berkeley. The service that these departments deliver their residents is emblematic of the master-planned vision the City has for its governance. For example, Pasadena boasts: “[Our] Public Health Department is dedicated to the physical, social and mental well-being of all who live, work, learn, and play in Pasadena.”

In Councilmember Agran’s quick poll, share what you would like to see in an Irvine health department. Respond by February 5 so we can share the results during the February 8 Irvine City Council discussion.
