Musick expansion sees widespread opposition

Last night, the City Council heard and received extensive testimony from Irvine residents opposed to the expansion of the James A. Musick Jail Expansion.

Councilmember Agran stands with residents who oppose this expansion and hears their calls for action.

As he said last night, the City of Irvine has, in many formal respects, run out of ways to express its opposition to this issue. However, as he explains in the clip, there is a conversation to be had with Supervisor Don Wagner to implore a different approach and express disapproval of his broader lack of responsiveness and consideration of the City and its residents. The Councilmember also echoed the community’s calls for a forum hosted by the City to raise awareness of human and financial cost of this incarceration project and a Council Resolution expressing the City’s opposition to the facility.

Mayor Khan alluded to an intent to take action on these fronts and Councilmember Agran will seek an update from her on these items by the next Council Meeting.

The Councilmember also acknowledges the tireless community effort that has been ongoing now for more than 25 years. “Having been a part of this effort myself for decades, I know the endurance it takes to stick with an issue as long as our community has — the testimony last night was powerful.”
